Title :  Which biographical approach?
Author(s) :  Robert, Cabanes
Abstract :  The biographical approach does not aim to illustrate analyses or theories constructed by other methods, but on the contrary to encourage the questioning of theories and representations in force in social science. In order to do this, it must meet its own internal methodological requirements and others connected with the field of study under consideration. The theoretical bases and the methodological requirements of the biographical approach will he examined in a perspective that we could call, as D. Bertaux does, ethnosociological (Bertaux, 1997), but that we would rather refer to as anthropological, if one thinks that the object of anthropology is to establish the model of interaction between the particular (ethnology) and the global (sociology).

Title :  Defining life stories
Author(s) :  Jean-Louis, Le Grand
Abstract :  This article proposes to discuss the definitions of life histories which are often both very different and sometimes implicit in different authors in the field. One can speak of the "definitional unknown", a neologism created here to show certain pre-suppositions relative to the definition of notion. Only two expressions "life history" and "life narrative" and one adjective "biographical" are discussed here hut there are many implications. The author defends a generic and anthropological definition of life history which hegins with daily life. He also refuses the slipping of the meaning of the term "biographical" as a synonym for "relative to the course of life", which seems to him to imply considerate ethical and epistemological drifting. Rather than a tendency to reification, the author defends a conception of life history as part of the dynamics of a process.

Title :  Lite stories: between history and memory
Author(s) :  André, Lévy
Abstract :  For Maurice Halbwachs, History begins where collective memory - tradition - ends. It thus has an history, deeply involved with that of the memory of men, developed in a livedthrough time, rather than in the abstract time of docks and stars of a History without subject. To transmit this memory, our own, together with that belonging to the traditions and ways of life and of thinking which constitute individual and collective identity, such would be the function and the ambition of autobiographical life histories. How can such life histories, recomposed and published (passed) by a third person, give access to an understanding of situations and processes underlying all groups and all societies, such is the question that this article attempts to investigate.

Title :  From singular experience to sociological knowledge
Author(s) :  Gilles, Houle
Abstract :  The relation of the social reseacher to the situation and people she or he is studying follows a movement from involvement in the subjectivity of the Other to constructing distance. This clinical stand is a necessary condition to the production of scientific knowledge. It can he related to the case study as life histories, correspondences or field journals.

Title :  Life stories and analysis of action in situation
Author(s) :  Daniel, Bertaux
Abstract :  For a long time French sociology was only interested in norms, rules, "structure" ; now it is concentrating most of its attention on action. The recourse to life histories seems to fit more easily into this new perspective than into the previous one. However, the hermeneutic analysis of a life history does not easily avoid the steepest slope, which is psychological. How can we develop the sociological aspect of the analysis of objects (conduct in situation, "semantic" interactions between relatives, etc) where the psychological and the social are closely mingled? By remembering that every action is done in situation, in a context; that it is also part of interactions with relatives and friends, that it is always in some way conduct that expresses a "habitus" produced by the totalising of earlier experiences. The example of a young woman receiving an allowance as a single parent (a supplementary benefit from which other income is deducted) who however continues to do hours of cleaning that she declares for tax purposes, makes it possible to show the complexity of relations between objective situation, relational situation and conduct. In this example, the life history reveals not only the truth of the actress but the falseness of the common sense discourse about "Welfare mothers".

Title :  Recounting one's life: the ontological quest of the contemporary subject
Author(s) :  Florence, Giust-Desprairies
Abstract :  The valorisation of an approach by narrative is part of the logic of an epoch which is characterised by narrativity, a consequence of the need that the individual has to formulate for himself the meaning of his own existence. Narration refers to two figures of subjectivity: one where intersubjectivity is a condition of the subject, the other characterised by selfreflection as a condition of independence. Being solicited to enter into a process of life history as a process of development is an offer that can promote the construction or consolidation of one or other of these figures. What is at stake is the fact that this process, as a social practice, may be a part of the reinforcement of cohesion, for a story that is too easy to read, or support a process of comprehension for an opening to a better acceptance of an open meaning. In this way, promoting processes of identity withdrawal or working towards more alterity.

Title :  Life history in groups: epistemological and methodological reflections
Author(s) :  Jacques, Rhéaume
Abstract :  We present here some thoughts relative to epistemological and ethical grounds of the approach, in the field of life stories, of "Family romance and social trajectories". The concepts of dialectics and historicity, and those of ethics of tragic constitute the major conceptual ground of this approach. Some theoretical and methodological characteristics are then examined, illustrating the originality of this approach, and also the fact that it is well grounded in psychosociological tradition. Some issues are then addressed, some risks explored relative, for example, to an excessive focus placed upon the individual, ignoring institutional or practical contextual constraints.

Title :  The social aspects of transfer and the feeling of identity in the work of construction of the narrative
Author(s) :  Elvia, Taracena
Abstract :  In this article we look at the notions of transfer and counter-transfer and their elucidation in group work in the context of involvement and research groups. We propose the notions of boundaries and articulation to reflect on various aspects on which transfer is built: social psychological aspects, acquisition of knowledge and an interpretative framework. We reflect on the taking into consideration of the transfer while group work is being done and on the analysis of the transfer and counter-transfer during the seminar and afterwards. We use tree examples experienced in various seminars, to analyse the different aspects of transfer and the way it has heen treated. We will analyse the construction of the life history as a process linked to the need for a feeling of identity and the subject's need to become aware of the identifications that act on his life.

Title :  Life, romance, history
Author(s) :  Vincent, de Gaulejac
Abstract :  Life history makes it possible to grasp the articulations between socio-historic, family, intrapsychic determinations and subjective experience. Between history as it may have happened "objectively" and the account that the subject may formulate on this history, there are important gaps that may give rise to ambiguity and paradox. Between fantasy and reality, between family romance and social trajectory. We must grasp the influences between the different registers of existence to help those who wish to be helped to understand in what way history is acting in them.

Title :  Complex listening
Author(s) :  Max, Pagès
Abstract :  lntroducing in life-history work a psychoemotional competence, in addition to the classical socioanalytical one, has revealed new articulations between the "sociofamily system" and the "emotional system". Reciprocally, a sociologist intervening in psychotherapy, or the simple use of a sociological competence by the psychotherapist, showed intersystemic articulations, and provoked surprising lateral effects, as well as accelerating the therapeutic process. A complex listening attitude aims at actively interconnecting defenses of heterogeneous character. It renews the problems of limits, omnipotence, interpreting, contract and demand.

Title :  Adult education
Author(s) :  Alex, Lainé
Abstract :  In this text, the author tries to prove the seminar "Roman familial et trajectoire sociale" is a genuine educational work. Actually, this work consists in making life stories structures or configurations clear. From this angle genealogical trees that are used as means of work, play a very important part. This analysis contains a conception of adult education considered in a broad sense, that is to say not as a process of learning pre-established knowledge, but as a self transformation of the learner himself.

Title :  Vocational guidance: between determinism and freedom
Author(s) :  Anasthasia, Blanché ; Ginette, Francequin
Abstract :  This article analyses the way that life stories have been introduced in the realm of vocational guidance. After having presented chose two concepts, the authors relate practises concerning pupils, in grammar-schools, working on the elaboration of projects. Relying upon their experiences, they engage a reflection about the contributions, limits, question of sense and development of those methods in vocational guidance.

Title :  Exiled memories, reconstructed memories: the impact of the family memory on trajectories
Author(s) :  Teresa Cristina, Carreteiro
Abstract :  Exiled memory is formed from "break-events" that force members of a family to leave their home nation. How these people reconstruct the reasons for their departure, suppressing certain affects, freezing certain memories and transmitting them to their descendents, that is the theme of this study. It is based on the case of a foreign woman who was able to work on her family story during a "Family romance and social trajectory"' seminar. A thorough analysis of her story enabled this woman better to understand the conscious and unconscious relations woven between the various members of her family, better to accept her desires and face the guilt engendered by her actions.

Author(s) :  Annie, Ernaux
Abstract :  Why talk about oneself ? Having recourse to literature against a bad, difficult life. Annie Ernaux relates what led her to writing, this autobiographical work in which words must be as close as possible to sensation, to reveal realities that exist in the world, and that are part of the human condition.
