Titre :  Position and career of "COFI": between post office employees and bank advisers

Résumé :  The French public Postal Service traditionally satisfied itself by trying to deliver mail in good conditions and managing in prudent fashion the small money deposits of the poorer part of the population. The recent decision to transform the Service into a true financial establishment led to the opening of "fin ancial advisor" ("Cofi" in internai jargon) positions in most of it offices. However the high staff turnover in this new fu nction has led the management to order a study to understand better how this new function integrates itself in the Se1vice's orga nisation and what the problems are. A survey by interviews ha been conducted amongst these agents, their colleagues and chiefs, in three post offi ces. These inte1v iews were analy ed both in terms of thematic and lexical content. The first conclusion is that the content of "Cofi" tasks and their contractual and operational environment leave these agents at the margin of the o rganisation's normal functioning. Whilst some of them continue to see themselves as normal Postal employees protected by their stature, and whose tasks must be precisely defined by th e organisation, the majority view differently their relationship with the orga nisation. They consider that they have an "individual contract", where they exchange their relative autonomy for their implication in their job. The quantitative results expected by the organisation represent for them a captivating challenge, which explains t11at significa nt extension of the workday's length and t11e Jack of regular hours are accepted voluntarily by the Cofis. However, for many colleagues but also for the most senior Cofis, t11is pressure is a high price to pay in regard of t11e advantages derived, even if t11ey remain fasc inated by this functioning
