Assisting the poor is an obligation of the nation in modern states. Taking the work of G. Simmel as my basis, I shall show that this obligation protects society much more than the poor. Today arrangements for aid, of which the RMI (Revenu Minimum d’Insertion) is a symbol, produce paradoxical effects. They fix the poor in their situation rather than getting them out of it. They instrumentalise the professionals who are confronted with the loss of the meaning of their work leading to their suffering and wear. As a conclusion to the article, some thoughts about how to get out of the paradoxes in terms of prospects for action are proposed. |
