A large number of conflict management publications have sprung up in various ways. In 1974, Watzlawick, Weakland, and Fisch published their now classic book, Change: Principles of Problem Formation and Problem Resolution. Theories about change had long existed. Watzlawick et al. concluded that the earlier theories explained first-order and second-order changes: First-order change is a variation in the way processes and procedures have been done in a given system, leaving the system itself relatively unchanged. Second-order change occurs when the system itself is changed. This type of change usually occurs as the result of a strategic change or a major crisis such as a threat against system survival. Second-order change involves a redefinition or reconceptualization of the business of the organization and the way it is to be conducted. This research presents and tests Watzlawick change theory on sales managers with the scenario method.
