Résumé : |
While periods of transition in people''s careers are currently common, these pivotal moments can collide with an individual''s identity. As a result, such an individual undergoes an identity process that can be influenced and regulated by the discourses and practices to which he or she is exposed. In the context of a professional transition, outplacement support can be offered to facilitate an individual''s transition. The aim here is to explore the question of outplacement, with its tools and practices, as a regulator of the actor''s identity work following a job separation. Our study is based on a documentary review of 22 presentations of individual outplacement services, triangulated with ten semistructured interviews conducted with French support professionals. A reading of the materials using floating attention, as well as thematic and theoretical coding, enables us to see outplacement as a regulator of the identity work of individuals experiencing professional transitions. Upon receiving support, an individual’s exposure to specific social identities, conveyed by particular discourses and the promotion of specific practices, can skew the person’s identity work, raising the question of whether outplacement as a standardized tool can limit the individual''s freedom to perform his or her identity work. Although the study is limited to an approach based on outplacement practices mobilized by support professionals, the follow-up of reclassified individuals will enable us to study in greater depth the effects of outplacement on the identity work of individuals undergoing professional transitions. |
