This article deals with the relation between social science and money from a psychoanalytical perspective. Discussion of the myth of the god Hermes, curiously patron of thieves as well as tradesmen, makes it possible to describe the stages of psychological evolution in which pregenital phantasies of taking possession, so of stealing, evolve towards a desire to trade with others when a level of genital organisation had been reached. The various types of conduct linked with money can be explained using unconscious symbolic significance that the phantasies of each of these stages confer on it. It can be seen that the rush towards having is linked to the identity lack of the pregenital structures whereas the genital structures lead to desacralising money. |
