How can we interpret the effects of the founding myth of a society, such as the society of the Dogons, which has been studied since the 1940s by Marcel Griaule’s team who have published many books on the subject? Françoise Michel Jones’s recent book, Retour aux Dogon, questions the classic hypotheses which link the myth to the consensual aspects of social life. An approach which is both psychosociological and psychoanalytic should on the contrary, by emphasising in particular the role of twinhood in the myth, make it possible better to grasp the meaning of the conflicts in caste relationships and between men and women in Dogon society: a style of interpretation that is exemplary and perhaps can be generalised. |
