This article highlights one of the regulatory mechanisms of the coaching profession, namely the processes of quality assurance. It specifies the contents and the limits of these. Initially, the choice of using the framework of convention theory is justified by the nature of the coaching service, which is at the same time fashionable, innovative and close to management consulting. After a literature review, an empirical study follows, based on the analysis of accreditation procedures and the ethical codes established by the major coaching associations, the so-called ‘reference authorities’. This study, which is both descriptive and critical, leads to useful recommendations for key stakeholders in coaching: coaches, coaches, coach trainers and human resource managers. |
