Titre :  Risk taking and search for limits: example of sporty motorcycle driving
Numéro :  20
Année :  2003
Volume :  IX
Auteur(s) :  Nicolas CHRISTAKIS
Résumé :  This paper presents research findings on a particular type of risky behaviour, motorbike speeding on roads. The research purpose was to understand how and why subjects provoke risk and manipulate danger in practice. The discussion stems from ongoing research based on in depth interviews with subjects involved in fast motorcycle driving and from participant observation. The qualitative analysis revealed that driving on the limits of velocity constitutes a type of ritualistic re-definition of personal boundaries and “upgrading” of the self. A double pleasure is involved in fast driving: one from experimenting with personal limits and therefore expanding boundaries, and another, from the satisfaction of exercising control on risk, reality and a possibility of death.
