Surpassing oneself or defeating others? The paradox of sport leads us to examine the dark side of sport: its mythical supports, its imaginary or realistic stakes, the collective identity investment based on primary narcissistic identification. The great sporting ceremonies that are supposed to sublimate aggressiveness, often unleash it in the supporters, with religion and politics getting mixed into it on a regressive mode. It is impossible to think of sport without its audience which is often a symptom of its fragility, both placed in a fiercely mercantile world, a world of violence which awakens a badly repressed imagination of death. |
