The authors compare the strategies that are part of the trading model (selling products) and the strategies which require help (washing car windscreens). Being part of institutional forms of regulation of trade or adopting informal methods regulated by the relation between the public and the one asking for money produces different effects. The authors show that these differentiated forms of gift/ charity have to be put into perspective with the cultural contexts in which they take place. In this article, the institutional and social frameworks in Quebec and Mexico make it possible to place the same practices of "begging" in different significances. |
